Vernissage, concert and performance: Thursday, 6 April, 7 pm.

The exhibition entitled Hear the Earth presents a project focusing on the construction of ceramic sound objects. The project was first shown at the Art Department of the Cieszyn branch of the Silesia University in Katowice. It was developed by a team of lecturers and students of the Institute of Art and the Institute of Music, focusing on unconventional features of burnt clay - its acoustic properties, the way it sounds. Thanks to the invited artists, who kindly offered to express their comments, the exhibition will become a unique installation combining objects, images and sounds.

The exhibition in Bielsko-Biała will contribute to a series of artistic events called the Academy of Earth Sounds, which has been developed by a group of academics and students from Cieszyn. In 2015, the University of Silesia in Katowice issued the publication Hear the Earth, edited by Małgorzata Skałuba-Krentowicz, which summarised the achievements of the Academy of Earth Sounds project. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the project launch, and Galeria Bielska BWA has been set as the venue for its celebration.

The event includes the presentation of new sound objects in an altered non-standard version created by Małgorzata Skałuba-Krentowicz, Katarzyna Handzlik-Bąk and students of the 2nd year of Artistic Education of the Institute of Art. The team has been joined by two new graphic artists: Krzysztof Kula from the Art Institute of the Faculty of Art in Cieszyn and Grzegorz Banaszkiewicz associated with the Jan Długosz Academy of Art in Częstochowa.

Krzysztof Gawlas - the composer of the musical score for the exhibition - will now offer an interactive musical piece using a mixture of live music and digitally processed recorded sounds of the instruments. This partially improvised musical piece by Krzysztof Gawlas has been created in order to present the unique sound of ceramic instruments. The processing makes it possible to cross the barrier of realism and extract the sounds which are inaudible in a more traditional acoustic experience.
On ceramic instruments: Paulina Bielesz, Karol Pyka, Marcin Żupański, Wojciech Golec i Krzysztof Gawlas.
In the words of the artists, the gallery's lower room will be transformed in a Synaesthetic Concert Hall for Sounds of the Earth.

Curated by Małgorzata Skałuba-Krentowicz.
The exhibition will run from 6 April to 7 May, 2017.
