Agata Smalcerz:
“The Revitalization of the Villa of Theodor Sixt in Bielsko-Biała” is a project implemented in 2017–2020 by Galeria Bielska BWA as part of the Regional Operational Programme of the Province of Silesia for 2014–2020. The concept of revitalization and the architectural design of the villa was prepared and conducted by Biuro Architektoniczne ARS Architektura in Tychy. Restored to its former glory after years of neglect, the house at ul. Adama Mickiewicza 24 is now the venue for a number of courses for senior citizens and children, which have been run since June by the Municipal Social Welfare Centre.
Starting from 6 November, local residents will be able to see works from the Art Collection of Galeria Bielska BWA in the newly opened exhibition rooms, and to attend various meetings which will be held in the renovated basement.
The inauguration ceremony will be accompanied by two exhibitions, both prepared by Galeria Bielska BWA: “For Johanne and Anna” which will be displayed in the new exhibition rooms and “The Seed”* in the villa’s basement. The former features artwork from the gallery collection and is curated by the art historian and director of the gallery Agata Smalcerz, and the latter presents a series of photographs by Sławomir Rumiak and Kanon Myokoin.
The exhibition “For Johanne and Anna” is dedicated to the first and second wife of Theodor Sixt. The presented paintings, prints, photographs and installations all share the present-day perspective of perceiving the role of women in private and social life.
The photographic series “The Seed” by Sławomir Rumiak and Kanon Myokoin delves into history of the villa, the fate of its owner and the symbolism of the ginkgo biloba, now recognised as a nature monument, which grows in the garden.
