Grand Chronicle tells a story about matter and motion, about becoming and entropy. A story of a closed system, a small universe governed by slightly haphazard rules, whose logic - visible in images - defies the rules of verbal expression.
An exhibition presenting the latest paintings by Marcin Zawicki, an artist associated with Gdańsk and the Academy of Fine Arts there. In Grand Chronicle we will see more still lifes created in the manner characteristic of the artist, which Stach Szabłowski described as follows:
Grand Chronicle is the premiere edition of my latest painting series, enriched with several works from the Homoiomerie cycle and complementing spatial objects. The exhibition focuses primarily on matter and its transformations: the relationship between the visible reality and the physical world; the truth contained in representation. This is an alchemical transubstantiation, an attempt to control matter - to understand and repeat the principles which become simple and most obvious rules when viewed from the perspective of the natural sciences, or in other words, seen through the eyes of the world and the "nature of things" which constitute them. The expected transmutation of lead into precious gold seems to be at hand, but the closer to success we are, the more the resulting glitter (of the precious ore) seems to be fading in favour of the very process of transmutation. If true, then any other change seems to be possible. The miraculous transformation of a painting is enchanted in the first touch of the pigment on its white surface. In an instant, a two-dimensional rectangle is transformed into a spatial form: it opens to the inside and outside. The Finestra aperta peers inside itself, and the vector of pigment moves towards the eye of the viewer. The painting (object) acquires the power of representation, refers outside of itself, and simultaneously becomes transparent. Disappears. Witchcraft. The narrative of a painting is never linear. Painting cannot be read the way you read a novel.
(...)Grand Chronicle tells a story about matter and motion, about becoming and entropy. A story of a closed system, a small universe governed by slightly haphazard rules, whose logic - visible in images - defies the rules of verbal expression. The chaos of matter, the eruption of the building material of visibility, freezes, arranges itself in forms, so that in a moment it will dissolve again in a great flood which will cleanse the imperfect world before another attempt to find a regulative principle.
