JANINA WICIEJEWSKA-POCHOPIEŃ – COSMIC LANDSCAPE

Geometric motifs in the paintings by the winner of the Golden Medal at Bielska Jesień 1968 – works from the Art Collection of Galeria Bielska BWA.

Currently presented at the exhibition in the Cafe-Club Aquarium in Galeria Bielska BWA, the works by Janina Wiciejewska-Pochopień come from the painting cycle “Cosmic Landscape” (1967-1968). The canvases feature geometric abstractions with motifs of spheres, hemispheres and other spherical shapes in sublime pastel colours.
One of the paintings from the series won the main prize during an early exhibition of Bielska Jesień – the Gold Medal and the First Prize of the Board of the Regional Association of Polish Artists in Katowice for the 6th National Painting Exhibition “Bielska Jesień” 1968 which was presented in the Exhibition Pavilion of the Association of Polish Artists in Bielsko-Biała (now Galeria Bielska BWA). The award-winning work entitled “Cosmic Landscape no. 7” was purchased by the Museum in Bielsko-Biała in 1989.

In 2014, Galeria Bielska BWA acquired funds from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for the purchase of five paintings from the series “Cosmic Landscape” which were added to the gallery’s Art Collection.

Jadwiga Wiciejewska-Pochopień was born on 6 February 1927 in Kolonia Gródek in the Lublin region; she died on 12 November 2020 in Kraków. She graduated from the first year of the two-year Secondary Art School in Zamość (school leaver’s exam in 1949). Between 1949 and 1954 she studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts; she received her degree in painting in 1955 in the studio of Professor Eugeniusz Eibisch. She was a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers from 1955, and  continued painting for the rest of her life. She lived and worked in Bielsko-Biała for many years. Between 1960 and 1984 she taught art at the State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Bielsko-Biała. She was awarded the Silver Badge of Merit for Cultural Activity of the Katowice Province (1972) and the Badge of Merit of the Minister of Culture and Arts (1980). In 1975, she received the Award of the Minister of Education and Upbringing. She participated in numerous regional, district and national exhibitions of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers, including “25 Years of Art in the Katowice Province” in Bytom (1969); “25 Years of ZPAP in Bielsko-Biała” (1970); National Painting Exhibitions “Bielska Jesień” (1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971); the Exhibition of Works by the Teachers of the Bielsko-Biała State Art School (1974), the Art Exhibition in Galeria Bielska BWA (2000). In 2015, in the Cafe-Club Aquarium in Galeria Bielska BWA, Janina Wiciejewska-Pochopień’s works were presented in a series showing paintings by Gold Medal winners of the oldest editions of the Bielska Jesień competition.
